ROWING TERMINOLOGY
Part of every Learn-to-Row session is learning the terminology used in rowing.

- WATERSIDE : While the boat is at the dock, the oarsperson with their blade on the water side of the boat.
- DOCKSIDE : While the boat is at the dock, the oarsperson whose blades are resting on the dock.
- PORT : Looking to the stern or at the cox, the RIGHT hand or stroke side. OR The command given instructing port side to take longer strokes or apply more power to their port blade in order to assist in turning the boat (this command can also be interpreted to reduce the power or length on stroke on starboard to further assist in the turn).
- STARBOARD : Looking to the stern or at the cox, the LEFT hand or bow side. OR The command given to power the boat more on starboard to assist in turning.
- EVEN OUT : Command given to row with even pressure on port and starboard in order to maintain the course. (Stay in a straight line).
- EASY : Command given by the cox to ask the crew to stop rowing.
- COX/COXSWAIN : The person or steersman of the boat who calls out the stroke rhythm.
