BC Day Row & Pancake Breakfast - August 4, 7 - 10 am

Monday, August 4th come out for a row and breakfast. We will be running the regatta course on this day so it is a good time to get your crews out for a practice! If you do not have a crew, no worries! - one can be put together on the day of the row. If you don't want to come for a row, you are welcome to join us for a pancake breakfast which will be held on the picnic area by the compound.

Bring friends and family to celebrate BC's 150th Birthday with a Pancake Breakfast! Pancakes, bacon, fruit, coffee & tea will be served after a great row gearing up for the regatta. The rowing club is heading towards being green, so please bring you own coffee mug/cup; plates & utensils will be provided. As always, breakfast is by donation.

2008 EXTERNAL REGATTAS 7/14/2008

The Regattas with an asterisk (*) are the club sponsored regattas. There will be a sign up list posted at the club very soon.

August 2, 2008 - Green Lake Summer Extravaganza : SPRINT RACING. It would appear that Delta Deas and Vancouver Rowing Club are not going to this sprint event, therefore we would be trailering. If anyone is interested, I will try to find out more.

August 14 - 17, 2008 - US Rowing Masters National Championships, Long Beach, CA : SPRINT RACES. Delta Deas and Vancouver Rowing Club are going to this event.

August 23 - 25, 2008 - Cariboo Rowing Tour : A touring weekend. Should be great. Three lakes and a relaxed row.

August 8 - 24, 2008 - Summer Olympic Games, Beijing, China : Sorry too late to enter but you can see it from your armchair!!

*September 20, 2008 - Head of the River, Blackie Spit Park, South Surrey, BC : Our 5.5 km HEAD RACE. Everyone from our club should enter. You will really enjoy it!

*September 21, 2008 - Pacific Northwest Challenge, Deas Island Regional Park, Delta, BC : SPRINT RACES. It would be great to have a good turn out for this as this club is our sister club.

*October 25, 2008 - Head of the Gorge, Victoria, BC : ONLY EXPERIENCED ROWERS. The tillicum Narrows can be very scary, and believe me, I have experience with this.

*October 26, 2008 - Head of the Elk, Victoria, BC : A wonderful HEAD RACE of 8 km. This is fun for everyone and just perfect after the Gorge the day before.

November 8, 2008 - Green Lake Frostbite : I don't have much info on this one and I have never rowed it, but it may be a great one to do as we are going down anyway.

*November 9, 2008 - Head of the Lake, Seattle, WA : This is a 3 mile HEAD RACE from Lake Union to Lake Washington. Although for the last 2 years it has been cancelled due to the weather conditions, for Lynn and I, it is our favorite head race of the year. It is not for the faint of heart though as it can be quite challenging in parts. There are an amazing number of boats entered, from Junior all the way to University and Olympic.

YEAR 2009 : Let's start training NOW!

January - Beat the Beast : an erg row off!

March - Elk Lake Spring Regatta : This is an 1850 m SPRINT! Great to start the year with.

April - Duelling Over a Grand : A lot of fun! 1000 m SPRINT racing on Elk Lake.

July - BC Provincial Championships : 1000 m SPRINT racing. Wonderful regatta to attend.

And LOTS MORE!
October 10 -18, 2009 - World Masters Games, Sydney, AU www.2009worldmasters.com.

INTERIOR ROWING SERIES 5/22/2008

Please contact Helen Healey if you are interested in this program.

"I wanted to touch base with everyone now that all rowing programs are up and running.
Firstly I wanted to let everyone know that Rowing BC has given me the position of Interior Development Coach.
This is all about developing rowing in the interior, and it is wonderful that Rowing BC has this as a priority!
Part of this job will be coming out to all the interior clubs and discussing your current and future directions, and how your club can develop.
Also making sure you are aware of the systems Rowing BC is putting in place to promote rowing and identify talent.
There are some exciting developments already this year.

Kelowna is about to take delivery of no less than 5 new boats, comprising 2 open water coxed quads, one double and two singles.
Their focus as a club is going to be touring oriented, and this will add a great new look to rowing in the interior.

A new club is being formed in Salmon Arm, and they have just had a four delivered to start things off there.
The big news for all interior clubs is the Interior Rowing Series.

This developed from a meeting of the interior clubs at Kamloops at the end of last season. Everyone at that meeting felt that we needed a communal identity, so to that end the Interior Rowing Series (IRS) was created by Chuck McDiarmid, the BC Provincial Coach.
The IRS will fulfill many objectives for us all.
It will promote the sport of rowing in the interior by raising awareness
It will create a sense of community and identity among the interior clubs
It will provide opportunities for coaches and clubs to learn new skills at each of the events

Finally it provides a new framework for rowers to experience the sport of rowing that is not solely based on competition.
It is worth noting that these events are now on the Rowing BC website and are creating considerable interest in the rowing community.
An important component of ensuring the success of the IRS is that clubs should all try to attend as many of the events as possible.
In other words, support each other.
You don’t need to send a large number, but if a few members from each club could attend as many events as possible, it will make a big difference.
Hopefully this will all be so exciting that you won’t be able to resist!

The concept is that each event will have three streams, coaching improvement, club development, and community involvement.

The events are as follows:

Nelson  July 26  this is simply a great regatta. Not as formal as the big ones over on the Island or in Vancouver, and a whole lot of fun. The setting is awesome and the camaraderie is great too. The food in Nelson is worth the drive on its own! For more info contact Kim Shea on 250 352 2953  email kimshea@shaw.ca

South Cariboo   August 23 and 24  this is wonderful tour, started last season by Jack Jenkins up at 100 mile house. Rowing new lakes, staying in B&B’s, good food, good company and a whole new look at rowing. For more info contact Jack Jenkins on 250 791 6463  email sepabay@shaw.ca

Kamloops   September 28  an event that raises money for cancer research while you row! A great day meeting new people and having a lot of fun while aiding a great cause. For more info contact Janine Chan on 250 372 1787  email jchan@tru.ca

The idea is that apart from Nelson and South Cariboo , you don’t need to take boats to these events. The host club will provide equipment. I will provide more detail in advance of each event.

MESSAGE FROM THE COACHING STAFF 5/07/2008

We are introducing a new look to our coached rows. This year we are encouraging all members to partner with each other to form regular crews. We recognize that sometimes it is not easy matching available time commitments and goals but the coaches are there to help. We will if course 'crew' rowers as they arrive to the row but if you have a partner, even just for that row or would like to try something different, please let us know. Whenever possible, we will keep our first year rowers together so they may continue their learning to row experience comfortable with their crewmates. This will mean that our first year rowers will require the majority of our time but we won't be hard to find on the water for anyone with coaching questions.

Helen Healey is putting together a list of regattas for all abilities and a training program is still in the works to help us all with our goals whether simply improving our fitness or training for a half dozen regattas this year.

For those keyed members who do not wish to participate in coached rows and wish to row outside these times, please ensure club boats are back at the dock at the scheduled start of the coached row.

We are all looking forward to a very successful year but we can't do it without you. All members of the executive and coaching staff are approachable and would appreciate any comments or suggestions you have.

THANK YOU MIKE! 3/17/2008

A big thank you to Mike Hall for organizing the head race last Saturday! It was a great turnout and lots of fun and we hope to be doing more of those fun races this season.
